The evolution of the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation since 1980

چکیده

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a key component of the climate through its transport heat in North Ocean. Decadal changes AMOC, whether internal variability or anthropogenically forced weakening, therefore have wide-ranging impacts. In this Review, we synthesize understanding contemporary decadal bringing together evidence from observations, ocean reanalyses, models and AMOC proxies. Since 1980, there for periods strengthening although magnitudes change (5–25%) are uncertain. subpolar Atlantic, strengthened until mid-1990s then weakened early 2010s, with some thereafter; these probably linked to buoyancy forcing related Oscillation. subtropics, 2001 2005 strong weakening 2014. Such large interannual complicates detection ongoing long-term trends, but does not preclude associated anthropogenic warming. Research priorities include developing robust sustainable solutions monitoring observation–modelling collaborations improve representation processes better ways distinguish variability. has role system. This Review documents since revealing decadal-scale that differ between subtropical regions.

Dissolved Organic Carbon in the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

The quantitative role of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export is evaluated by combining DOC measurements with observed water mass transports. In the eastern subpolar North Atlantic, both upper and lower limbs of the AMOC transport high-DOC waters. Deep water formation that connects the two limbs of the AMOC results in a high downward ex...

Atlantic Dominance of the Meridional Overturning Circulation

North Atlantic (NA) deep-water formation and the resulting Atlantic meridional overturning cell is generally regarded as the primary feature of the global overturning circulation and is believed to be a result of the geometry of the continents. Here, instead, the overturning is viewed as a global energy–driven system and the robustness of NA dominance is investigated within this framework. Usin...

Changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Introduction: the concept of the MOC Climate models project a slow down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) in the twenty-first century. This slow down is expected to affect climate over Europe. In particular, it damps the temperature rise due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The MOC is associated with the thermohaline circulation (ThC), which is the large-scale ocean c...

Interdecadal North-Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Variability in EC-EARTH

Received: date / Accepted: date Abstract The pre-industrial run of the newly developed EC-EARTH model fea1 tures marked interdecadal variability with a dominant time-scale of 50-60 yr. 2 An oscillation of approximately 2 Sverdrup (1 Sv = 10 ms) is identified, 3 which manifests itself as a monopole causing the overturning to simultaneously 4 strengthen(/weaken) and deepen(/shallow) as a whole wi...

The Impact of Tropical Atlantic Freshwater Fluxes on the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

The influence of ENSO-related changes in the Atlantic-to-Pacific freshwater budget on the North Atlantic meridional overturning is examined using the University of Victoria (UVic) Earth System Climate Model. The initial analysis of freshwater fluxes in the 50-yr NCEP–NCAR (NCEP50) reanalysis product and Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) dataset reveals that the transport of water ...
